Phonics is a logical way to explain
spellings and pronunciation to a child. The kindergarten years are
the right time to begin with a phonics lesson. It is based on
various levels and the pronunciation greatly helps a child to know
about the easiest way to understand the rhyming words. The early
lessons to a child are about fun and lot of poems and songs. Songs
with melody help the child to understand the varied words and their
meanings. This is helped with actions or facial expressions.
Children follow the same and slowly get to know the meaning. It is
so important to cherish their aptitude for learning with a lot of
read aloud books, word books and introduction to alphabets.
Ideally children must first learn to draw and doodle first. Slowly
they can be introduced to capital English alphabets and the
connecting words through pictures. The second step is sure about
lower case alphabets. All kids are quick at learning. The only
common problem is adaptation to a routine and sitting in a place.
With lot of practice and patience it is surely possible for you to
teach the child. Lessons at home should be informal. If the child is
subjected to too much discipline, then they prefer to avoid studies.
Any kind of disturbance must be avoided so that the concentration is
better. Kids are likely to develop sitting habits and develop love
for home work if the initial phase is done well.
Phonics help children read better. Originally the idea of phonics is
not about mugging up the sounds. It is good if they can know how
words are formed. The introduction of rhyming words, splitting and
then blending words would be right way to make them know about
phonics. There are several books on phonics based on grading and
they can progress to various levels slowly. Slow and steady would be
the right method. Just as we need breaks to concentrate on our work,
it is good if you can get some sing along books or look into some
audio interests connected with phonics so there is no stress just
about phonics lessons.
Schools are extremely good at teaching phonics. In fact, most
schools conduct a phonic class for parents and care givers. This is
really fun to go back to learning in the elementary way. Fun with
words, actions, rhymes are really interesting and it is good to get
involved in these sessions so that you know the right way to teach
kids. Though you may have the best of vocabulary and a great
pronunciation, teaching is really taught in these phonics. It would
just be great to take about 4 alphabets per day and have a family
session to make add fun to your bonding.
